Apple Crisp

Adapted from Allrecipes

Ingredients – Makes 1 9×13 inch pan

  • 7 large Granny Smith Apples (peeled, cored, sliced very finely)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 tbsp AP flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp lemon juice

(for the topping, we made doubled the amount, because lots of people commented that the crumble wasn’t thick enough to balance the amount of apples. But it is up to personal preference whether you like a thicker crusty crumble or a thinner layer of it)

  • 2 cups oats
  • 1 cup AP flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar + 1/3 cup  (Next time I’ll try to reduce this extra 1/3 cup to 1/4 cup of sugar)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 225g unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp vanilla

How to Make:

  1. Preheat oven to 180C (350 F).
  2. Butter a large dish (9×13 inch).
  3. Mix the apples with the next 5 ingredients on the list and set aside. (you can either choose to lay the apples out and sprinkle the sugar, flour, cinnamon mixture on top, but I like to make sure that all the apples are coated consistently – to ensure that the sourness of the apples don’t over power the dish)
  4. Make the crumble by mixture all the ingredients for the topping together and rubbing cold butter in with your fingers.
  5. Lay the apples on a large pan and spread the topping over evenly.
  6. Bake for 45-50 minutes.
  7. Serve warm with vanilla ice-cream.
